Report: Chatham deputy fired over molestation charge was beaten with bat by victim's father

Dustin McMillan was allegedly caught molesting his best friend’s 13-year-old daughter Sunday morning and was later threatened with a gun and beaten with a bat, according to a Bryan County Sheriff’s Office report released Friday.

McMillan, who had been a Chatham County Sheriff’s deputy since 2007, was arrested after he reportedly admitted molesting the girl.

A report on the incident indicated McMillan and the victim were in a computer room when her father walked in and found them. The father told McMillan — who had been his best friend — to take his 5-year-old son and leave his Ellabell home.

As McMillan tried to drive away, the father walked up to the vehicle and pointed a rifle at McMillan but saw his son in the back seat.

The father “stated he looked at Dustin’s son sitting in the back seat and did not pull the trigger because of this,” the report stated. The report also stated the father told “Dustin to thank his son for saving his life.”

McMillan dropped his son off with a relative and was called back to the house by the father, who then beat him with an aluminum bat and kicked him several times.

On Friday, Bryan County Sheriff’s Lt. Resa Lopez said McMillan did not want to press charges against the father and his son now stays with his mother in Statesboro.

Lopez also said the molestation was not ongoing. McMillan was released from the Bryan County jail after posting 15 percent of a $25,000 bond, she said.

Bryan County investigators notified the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, which terminated McMillan on Tuesday after he confirmed the allegations, said Ron Robinson, Chatham sheriff’s spokesman.

“After we did our investigation, that’s when the sheriff said we need to cut ties with him,” Robinson said, adding McMillan returned the last of his county-owned equipment Friday.

McMillan worked inside the Chatham County jail and was a certified police officer, Robinson said.
