Missing Kids

Missing Kids

When people hear about child trafficking, they think
about Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe or Central
America. They think it is terrible, but that it only happens
somewhere else, on the other side of the world. What
most Americans do not recognize is that child trafficking
is a major problem on Main Street USA.
A report by Richard J. Estes and Neil Alan Weiner of the University of Pennsylvania
estimated that 293,000 American youth are currently at risk of becoming victims of
commercial sexual exploitation. They found that most of the victims are runaway
or thrownaway youth, living on the streets. They found that 55% of street girls
engage in formal prostitution; that 75% work for a pimp; that the average age at
which girls first become victims of prostitution is 12-14; and that for boys, the
entry age is slightly younger at ages 11-13.
This is an enormous problem with hidden victims. Yet, it is under-recognized and
under-reported. One law enforcement official said, “the only way not to find this
problem in any American city is simply not to look for it.” Fortunately, America
has begun to look.
